Meridian Hotels brought Occa Design to the team to deliver a Holiday Inn with wedding and conference facilities in addition to spa and leisure.

The Holiday Inn Sofia hotel was designed to 5* standards creating a sophisticated, high-end Holiday Inn hotel in the foothills of the Vitosha Mountains in Bulgaria.  Situated in the evolving Sofia Business Park, the hotel would be integral to the ongoing development of the area.

With an international team on the project, from our Indian/ UK based client to the Bulgarian main contractor and architects to the Romanian sub-contractors, and with specifications from both Europe and UK based suppliers, the project required careful coordination.  Occa Design was also appointed to the main contractor to advise them in delivering a project of this scale and standard.

The brief was to create a contemporary design that was different to anything else in Sofia.  Three standalone restaurants and two bars, in addition to external terracing, would complement the main hotel offering.  Occa Design was appointed to provide full interior design services for the entire Holiday Inn Sofia hotel, from bedrooms and corridors to public areas, spa, swimming pool, treatment rooms, banqueting and conferencing.

Clean lines and defined spaces linked by an open plan spine formed the main public spaces.  Throughout the interiors, a variety of fixed seating and timber screens create intimate areas and inviting spaces. Injections of colour were applied across a neutral backdrop, and local influences were found in bespoke detailing.  Contemporary furniture shapes in high-quality materials enhance the stylish feel of the spaces.  Ege Carpets worked with Occa Design to manufacture bespoke carpets, to Occa designs, for the entire property.  Lighting was a mix of European branded products and bespoke feature lighting made locally in Bulgaria.

The Holiday Inn Sofia hotel remains hugely successful and, some 13 years on, the timeless yet contemporary interiors and high-quality finishes have stood the test of time.
