Description
Atlas Hotels appointed Occa Design to undertake a limited soft refurbishment of the Public Areas of Holiday Inn Express Southampton West.
The site was an exiting Generation 1 property, with a small public area and insufficient buffet.
With a limited budget, our brief was to increase the floor area by removing a meeting room, reconfiguring back of house areas and integrating a new and larger buffet area to the space. The interiors were to take influence from the Gen 4 scheme, however, a softer approach was requested, with less metal framing, more upholstery, the introduction of a carpet and an increase in the warm timber wood, to suit the high family user group seen at the hotel.
The colour palette of the Gen IV scheme was applied to the soft furnishings and the feature felt panels and screens were brought over from the concept. Softer furniture pieces were chosen within the budget and wooden legs replaced metal where possible. The new buffet area was designed in keeping with the brand and a bespoke carpet was created, suited to the contemporary style. The original Gen 1 bar counter and reception desk were retained, and lounge furniture was retained and reupholstered.
As with the Gen IV concept materials and finishes fuse together to create a neutral backdrop enabling the contrasting brand colours to stand out, with natural timbers adding warmth and texture. A mix of high and low seating helps define the spaces, creating a casual ambience.
The resulting interiors are fresh and bright, a sense of playfulness is found in the furniture styles and vibrant colour palette. The Holiday Inn Southampton West interiors offer a strong solution to a limited budget refurbishment with core shopfit elements retained from previous generation concepts. The scheme has subsequently been further developed to the richer and darker proposition seen at later Atlas refurbishments.
