Our concept for Apt 12 drew inspiration from the colours and materials of the coastal location of the property, to create a sleek and contemporary home-from-home for our Californian clients in Scotland.
Hamilton Grand Heritage
The Grand Hotel was originally built by Thomas Hamilton in 1895 overlooking of the Home of Golf. Setting a benchmark for luxurious hospitality, it was the first hotel in Scotland to have hot & cold running water in every bathroom and a pneumatic elevator.
Following years of mixed-use and neglect, the building was acquired by Kohler Co; the American owners of The Old Course Hotel. Between 2011 and 2013 they painstakingly converted it into 27 private luxury apartments and renamed it Hamilton Grand.
Hamilton Grand The Brief
Our brief for Apt 12 was to create a stylish and welcoming bolt hole in St Andrews that accommodates busy family life and the needs of children of different ages & stages.
Based in California, our clients wanted to work with a team on the ground in the UK that could provide a turnkey design and procurement solution – leaving them to enjoy their wonderful new apartment from the moment they landed in Scotland.
HAMILTON GRAND Concept
Sand, dunes, driftwood and the muti tonal colours of the sea influenced our design for Apt 12 as we curated a mix of luxurious materials and finishes in natural & soft tones with coastal accents of greys, taupes, teal & gentle shades of blue.
Beautiful furniture pieces fuse timber and rich upholstery details to create multiple stylish – yet fully functional – spaces throughout the apartment that respond to every family member’s requirements.
Hamilton Grand Specialist Joinery
Our biggest challenge in Apt 12 was how we might accommodate three growing boys [and their friends] in a two-bedroom apartment. Our solution was to transform the main bedroom into a breathtaking bunk room that can sleep up to 6 people – comfortably!
Team OCCA got to work on an innovative layout and bespoke joinery that rose to the challenge. Warm oak floors and finishes are offset by black steel frames of the bed structure and enhanced with soft linens in taupes and blues, reminiscent of the seascape outside.
Hamilton Grand What We Did
From architectural layouts to innovative bespoke furniture design, the OCCA Technical Team worked up a full drawing package and scope of works, while the OCCA Design Team carefully selected every piece of furniture, fittings and equipment to create a beautiful and functional space for the family that was true to the coastal aesthetic.
The OCCA Procurement Team then took over to source, purchase and install every single item in the apartment, ready for the new owners to turn up and enjoy their first night in their fully fitted out home from home.
Happy Endings The Results
We love the design and the apartment has been just perfect for our family - we can’t thank you and the team enough!
