Description

Pacific Care’s Kintyre Care Home is an award-winning 16-bedroom specialist dementia care facility based in Kirkintilloch, Scotland.

Occa Design were brought in to provide interior design services to this new build facility which offers high levels of specialised nursing care to elderly residents with Dementia.   Our brief was to create high quality, homely interiors for this specialist facility, all in line with the latest guidelines for dementia care.  The scope of the project included bedrooms, lounge areas, dining room, quiet room and corridors.

Utilising information supplied by the University of Stirling’s Dementia & Ageing Research Group, and working with experience suppliers with a specialist understanding of Dementia, Occa Design created an interior design scheme which offered a hotel-like experience and sense of comfort in a style which was appropriate for the residents needs.

Amongst other examples patterned florals were defined identifiable as prints and so not-easily mistaken for reality and use of bold repetitive patterns like spots was limited.  Every public room was finished in a different colour scheme so spaces were easy to identify and we created four bedroom schemes to allow choice.  Bespoke wallcoverings featuring local imagery of days gone by were created in the corridors and reception, offering a sense of comfort  to residents who often have better long term memory retention. All furniture and materials used were durable and hygienic whilst remaining inviting and appealing to residents.

“The Kintyre Care Home’s design and interior finishes have been selected to help and stimulate our residents and includes a reminiscence room, a new spa featuring a hairdresser and nail bar, in addition to attractive secure gardens that make the most of the stunning views of the Campsie Hills. The care home is designed to be cosy and welcoming, and with its limited number of bedrooms, this home is ideal for older people who prefer more a more intimate care environment.”  Ann McKinnon, Manager
