The Old Course Hotel's new rooftop bar transforms an iconic golfing destination into a year-round retreat with heated seating pods and varied outdoor seating, blending functionality, elegance, and the natural beauty of St Andrews to offer guests a comfortable and scenic experience in all seasons.
The West Deck Background
The Old Course Hotel overlooks the iconic 17th “Road Hole” of the Old Course and is a short walk from the town of St Andrews, Scotland.
Having opened in 1968 and now recognised as one of the world’s leading resorts, it offers stunning views of West Sands beach, and is positioned just three yards from the 17th fairway, the most challenging par 4 globally. Acquired by Kohler Co. in 2004, it has hosted numerous golfing legends and dignitaries, continuing to be a cornerstone of golfing heritage and hospitality.
The West Deck The Brief
The Old Course Hotel requested a ‘secret’ rooftop bar that offers year-round comfort amidst the unpredictable Scottish climate, optimising views of the Old Course and West Sands.
The design features heated seating pods for shelter on colder days and a variety of outdoor seating options to enjoy drinks with scenic views. Additionally, the design incorporates a transitional scheme, providing a warm and cosy atmosphere with mood lighting and trellis planting during the autumn and winter months, and a fresh, bright ambiance with soft blue and teal tones to reflect the surrounding coastal landscape during the spring and summer.
The West Deck Narrative
The combination of the iconic Old Course Golf Course, beautiful surrounding landscapes and sandy coastlines of St Andrews provide the breathtaking backdrop for the new rooftop bar.
While the design takes inspiration from the internationally acclaimed Botanic Gardens of St Andrews in embracing the Scottish climate and native plants, this ‘hidden gem’ of St Andrews celebrates the natural beauty of Scotland in an unexpected setting.
The West Deck What We Did
From the initial stages, the design team was thorough in answering the practicality challenges of an open-air rooftop on Scotland’s East Coast, creating a design which is durable in an environment with often unpredictable weather but also compliments the beauty of the surrounding landscape and location within the 5* Old Course Hotel.
Beginning with layouts, space planning, and detail drawings and incorporating every aspect of the design process to include landscaping, and custom FF&E specification and procurement, to provide a design to offer comfort, functionality and elegance in a space to be used all through the year.
