Young & Gault Architects
Holiday Inn Express Dundee is a new build property located on the waterfront in Dundee City Centre. Occa Design was appointed to work alongside Young & Gault Architects, creating a brand aligned interior design scheme for the public areas of the hotel. Our brief from the client team at Saltire Leisure was to create an open plan space which was young, punchy and memorable. Contemporary in style and with a vibrant colour palette the space should also ensure the full functionality and operational success of a hotel.
With public areas situated on the first floor of the hotel and a variety of retail units at ground floor, the sense of arrival and the journey up through the space was of primary importance. A mezzanine void and feature staircase create a link between the two levels, leading to a bright open plan reception and public space.
Strong architectural forms and clean lines shape the spaces, with simple white paint finishes keeping the contemporary style. A mix of timber, carpet and tiled floors help to define the open plan space, creating routes through from reception to restaurant. Feature screens and curved fixed seating booths create intimacy.
Oversize sofas, feature coffee tables and timber dining furniture in black and grey finishes are complemented by the vibrant accent colours and patterned fabrics seen in the stools, cushions and blinds. The green is then seen again within the hand poured resin panels with seaweed insert, used in the feature screens in both the lobby and lounge.
Completed in 2009, this successful Holiday Inn Express hotel has public spaces in a strong interior design style, which feels fun, contemporary and stylish. Occa Design completed further project work for Saltire Leisure, providing a further interior design scheme for an additional new-build Holiday Inn Express in Ayr.
